South Western Main Line reopens after track circuit fault

A TRACK circuit failure caused more disruption on the South Western Main Line to London Waterloo, as the RMT strikes entered their second day.

All lines have now reopened, but some disruption is expected to continue through the afternoon.

The problem, near Surbiton, prompted Network Rail to urge passengers not to travel between Surbiton and London on the main line until midday.

Some stations, such as Esher and Hampton Court, lost their London services for a while.

The appeal came on top of ‘planned disruption’ caused by the RMT action in the continuing dispute over on-train staffing.

Network Rail had said: ‘There is a major signalling failure which is affecting all lines between Woking and Surbiton, meaning trains are unable to run through to London Waterloo. Trains between Salisbury and London Waterloo will start and terminate at Basingstoke.'

The RMT strikes on SWR are set to continue until Saturday this week unless a resolution to the dispute is found. Further walkouts have also been announced on all four Saturdays in November.
