Phase 1 of new Wolverhampton station opens

THE first phase of Wolverhampton’s new station has opened as part of a £150 million interchange for trains, trams and buses. The railway station was already close to the existing bus station, and an extension of the tramway from the original terminus at St George’s will also bring trams to the site. Phase one includes six ticket machines, new accommodation for British Transport Police, toilets, a baby changing area, units for three shops and staff rooms for train crew. Wolverhampton Council leader Cllr Ian Brookfield said: ‘A lot of hard work has been put in by all the partners on the Interchange scheme.’ The second phase, completing the new interchange, is set to open early next year.
