Stadler completes new Greater Anglia fleet

THE complete fleet of 58 new Stadler trains for Greater Anglia should be in service by the summer, Stadler has said. All older rolling stock on Greater Anglia’s intercity, regional and rural routes is being displaced by the new fleet, which consists of 38 bi-mode units and 20 electric ones.

The first bi-modes arrived last year, and the electric units began to follow in January. The electric trains are for the intercity services between Norwich and London and for Stansted Express, with 10 units for each route.

The order, for a total of 378 vehicles and worth some £600 million, has been financed by pension funds and insurance companies through Rock Rail East Anglia, a joint venture between Rock Rail, Aberdeen Standard Investments and GLIL Infrastructure.

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and its effect on rail travel nationally, Greater Anglia is being run as a management contract for the Department for Transport until later this year at least.
