Trains return after West Coast Main Line derailment

Trains are running between Preston and Carlisle again after a derailment early on Monday morning closed the line.

The front wheels of an Avanti West Coast Pendolino travelling south from Glasgow left the rails and four people were slightly hurt, but none needed hospital treatment. The passengers on the train were taken to a nearby hotel, and later continued their journeys by road.

The train came to rest with the front of its leading power car blocking the down line, which meant that no trains could run between Preston and Carlisle.

Network Rail had earlier confirmed that a landslip was the cause, but is now describing it once again as ‘suspected’.

Network Rail engineers worked into yesterday afternoon to move the damaged train and repair the surrounding overhead line equipment, track and bankings.

North West Route director Phil James said: ‘Services are now running again on this vital section of the West Coast Main Line.

‘We thank passengers for the patience and understanding they have shown during the very complex repair programme.’
