Some storm-damaged lines will stay closed today

Network Rail engineers are checking lines in many parts of the country for damage and obstructions after Storm Goretti moved east last night.

Winds of up to 160km/h (100mph) were reported, with a rare red warning in force in most of Cornwall. Passenger services west of Plymouth are still suspended this morning, and trains are not expected to return until this afternoon at the earliest.

Services are also still suspended in Devon to Barnstaple and Okehampton until later today.

Very heavy snow in the West Midlands and surrounding areas has blocked a number of routes, and staff are using snow ploughs and chainsaws to clear the lines. Passengers in the region are being advised not to attempt rail travel until this afternoon, and Network Rail warned that some lines may not reopen before tomorrow.

Wales was also badly hit by the weather. Transport for Wales said there are no trains nor replacement buses between Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog, Bidston and Wrexham, Shrewsbury and Swansea, Carmarthen and Whitland/Pembroke Dock/Milford Haven/Fishguard Harbour, Maesteg and Ebbw Vale Town, Hereford and Shrewsbury, Birmingham International and Shrewsbury, and between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury. Services on some other Welsh lines have been reduced in frequency, including local services around Cardiff.

Some other blocked lines in England may also stay closed until Saturday. These include Sheffield-Manchester and other routes in the north west, including Manchester-Hadfield and Manchester-Buxton.

International passengers are being warned that Eurostar services are still likely to be disrupted today, because of bad weather on the continent.

Services in Scotland had been seriously disrupted by snow earlier this week, but all lines are open again.

Network Rail regional director Jake Kelly said: ‘Thousands of railway colleagues are doing everything they can to get the railway open in areas affected by Storm Goretti, but I would strongly advise passengers to check their journeys today as we know some lines won’t be able to run until Saturday.’
