Rail passengers warned of disruption in new storm

Train services in parts of Wales as well as in southern and south west England are being delayed or cancelled as a result of Storm Chandra.

Replacement buses are running in Devon and Cornwall because the lines to Okehampton, Barnstaple and Newquay have all been flooded, while there are speed restrictions affecting the main line through Dawlish after part of a sea wall was destroyed by heavy seas at the weekend, scattering debris on the down line.

Train services are suspended between Southampton Central and Bournemouth, between Fareham and Eastleigh, through Sway, between Salisbury and Southampton Central via Romsey and between Honiton and Exeter St David’s, because these lines are blocked by floodwater, and there are no trains serving Ryde Pier Head, again because of the weather. Some trains departing from Ryde Esplanade have also been cancelled, although trains are running between Ryde St Johns Road and Shanklin.

In Wales and the Borders services are being disrupted between Newport and Hereford. A tree is blocking the line between Crewe and Shrewsbury and also on the Heart of Wales line, where a tree has fallen across the railway at Llanbister Road. Transport for Wales says these problems are likely to be cleared by this afternoon.

There are also warnings of snow later today on higher ground in northern England and Scotland.
