The delayed station at Northumberland Park on the Newcastle-Ashington line opened yesterday, and Northern said the first train had arrived at 08.10.
The new station is about ten minutes’ travel time from Newcastle and is also an interchange with Tyne & Wear Metro services.
The other stations on the line, which opened in 2024 but without some intermediate stations at first, are Ashington, Blyth Bebside, Newsham, Seaton Delaval, Manors and Newcastle. The last of all to open will be Bedlington, on 29 March.
Northern’s commercial and customer director Alex Hornby said: ‘We’ve been working hard to prepare for the opening of Northumberland Park and are looking forward to welcoming customers on board this weekend.
‘The Northumberland Line is having a really positive impact on the region and this new station will allow even more people to benefit from quick, convenient and affordable train travel that opens up a range of new opportunities.
‘We’re delighted to see the line has become so popular and are exploring all available options to increase capacity, so we can provide more seats and space on board the busier services.’
