Major West Coast disruption as fire closes Glasgow Central

Hundreds of trains have been cancelled after a fire broke out in a shop next to Glasgow Central station yesterday afternoon.

The high level station is closed, while although trains are continuing to run through the low level platforms they are not stopping, with passengers advised to use Argyle Street instead.

The fire has gutted a building in Union Street, but Network Rail has not reported any damage to the station itself, although it will remain closed for at least the rest of today.

ScotRail trains on nine routes have been cancelled, while other trains are being terminated away from Glasgow Central at stations like Paisley Gilmour Street.

Avanti West Coast trains from London are running as far as Motherwell, where passengers can change for trains to Edinburgh or stations in the Strathclyde area.

The Caledonian Sleeper from London to Glasgow is terminating at Edinburgh this morning, while all TransPennine Express services between Glasgow Central and Liverpool Lime Street or Manchester Airport have been cancelled. CrossCountry services are starting from Edinburgh.

ScotRail service delivery director Mark Ilderton said: ‘Unfortunately, we will not be able to operate train services in or out of Glasgow Central high level following the major fire near the station. Our trains which operate via Glasgow Central low level will continue to run, but will not stop at the station.

‘We are sorry to customers for the impact this will cause, and we would urge them to check their journey options before they travel, and we aware there will be very limited replacement transport.’
