Major disruption at Manchester Piccadilly continues

A fault with the overhead wires at Manchester Piccadilly is expected to cause many delays and cancellations today, which are also affecting trains to Manchester Airport.

Services on ten Northern routes were being cancelled until at least 08.00, without rail replacement buses, and Avanti West Coast trains from London are also being cancelled or delayed, with some terminating at Stockport.

TransPennine Express services are also being disrupted between Liverpool Lime Street and Cleethorpes, as well as between Manchester Airport and Edinburgh, Glasgow Central, Huddersfield, York and Redcar Central.

Transport for Wales services are terminating at Wilmslow.

Wiring on the station throat was damaged yesterday morning, and trains only started to return to Piccadilly at 07.00 today.

North West route director Chris Wright said: ‘The issue is complex but our teams are working hard to repair the railway as soon as possible.

‘We have worked closely with our train operator partners to keep passengers on the move wherever possible, so please check the National Rail Enquiries website for the latest information on train services in the coming days.’
