The driver of a Greater Anglia train which derailed at Wickford on 14 August has reported seeing a 'kink' in the track.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch said the train had been moving at around 77 mph (124 km/h) when it derailed. The driver reported seeing the kink which 'rocked the driving cab' as the train passed over it.
Forward-facing CCTV shows a misalignment in the track at the same place as the driver’s report and the point of derailment.
The last vehicle derailed and its wheels ran on the sleepers and ballast for around 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometres). The train remained upright and there were no reported injuries to the 62 people thought to be on board.
It was the second derailment within 24 hours, on two of the hottest days of the year. Track distortion was also reported at the site near Lewes where the last three coaches of a Southern train bound for Eastbourne had derailed and overturned in a field, injuring 30 people -- two of them seriously.
The line has been blocked since then, but was set to reopen again today.
