LINES to London Waterloo were blocked for a short time this morning, following a helicopter crash near the station in which two people were killed and around 12 reported injured.
One of the people who died is believed to have been the helicopter pilot, while the other had been on the ground.
Eyewitnesses have been describing explosions and flames. The helicopter had collided in mist with a crane on a tall building in Vauxhall and then flew towards Wandsworth Road, where it plunged to the ground at about 08.00.
Although the main lines to Waterloo were not directly affected, trains using the 'Windsor side' of the station were stopped briefly as a precaution, but South West Trains said the lines were soon reopened and that services were 'running well' again by 09.00, although there were some short delays on the routes involved.
South West Trains and London Underground services did not call at Vauxhall for a while, but the station had re-opened by midday.
Witnesses said the crash site became a sheet of flame after the main part of the helicopter hit the road, with several pedestrians reporting narrow escapes from the falling debris.
All the emergency services were quickly at the scene in response to many 999 calls from people in the area, which includes the flower and vegetable market at New Covent Garden.
The scene of the crash was sealed off, and there was major traffic congestion in the Vauxhall area.
The Air Accident Investigation Branch has started an inquiry.
