Glasgow Central station is closed again today, after a devastating fire destroyed a building alongside on Sunday night.
The high level platforms are still sealed off, while although trains are running through the low level station they are not stopping.
The ScotRail network in Strathclyde remains seriously disrupted, with services suspended on a number of routes, while long-distance trains run by Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express are being terminated short, diverted to other stations or cancelled.
Caledonian Sleepers are also not serving Glasgow for the time being.
Network Rail says it believes there was no ‘significant damage’ to the station, which is the busiest in Scotland, but safety checks will be continuing today and it is not known when Central can reopen.
Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken has praised the firefighters who prevented the fire spreading to the station.
She told BBC Scotland: ‘A lot of people don't realise that in these old buildings no floor is the same, so it was an enormous challenge for them. The city owes them a debt of thanks. It could have been so much worse.’
ScotRail’s chief operating officer David Ross agreed, saying: ‘Glasgow Central will remain closed on Tuesday while the impact of the fire in the building next to the station is assessed and we expect disruption to continue for several days.
‘We’d like to thank our colleagues in the fire and emergency services who worked incredibly hard to tackle the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the station itself.’
