Network Rail has revealed that more than 400 metres of overhead wires were damaged by a train outside Manchester Piccadilly on Thursday evening, which led to all platforms being closed so that engineers could carry out repairs.
Disruption has ended today, when Network Rail declared the station ‘fully open’ again at 11.00, although it warned that some changes to services were still possible for a while.
Network Rail North West route director Chris Wright apologised for the problem.
He continued: ‘The overhead lines failed at Manchester Piccadilly on Thursday. Since that happened our teams of engineers have been working around the clock to repair the damaged 400-metre stretch of high-voltage wires.
‘I’d like to thank people for their continued patience and would advise anyone planning to travel into Manchester today to check National Rail Enquiries for the latest travel information.’
