Some ScotRail services could return to Glasgow Central High Level later this week, as work continues on making the station safe after a fire destroyed a neighbouring building in Union Street nine days ago.
Glasgow City Council has said what remains of the structure is unsafe and is demolishing the rest of the building, while checks have been continuing at Glasgow Central, where water is known to have caused some damage to an office.
The high level station has been closed since the fire, with train services continuing to be badly disrupted, although trains began calling again at the undamaged low level platforms on Wednesday.
ScotRail said: ‘The position remains that no ScotRail services will operate from the high level until Wednesday at the earliest.’
Other operators affected by the closure are Avanti West Coast, Caledonian Sleeper, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express. Their services are either suspended or terminating elsewhere. Avanti West Coast trains are running to and from Motherwell, while Caledonian Sleeper passengers are using Edinburgh.
Network Rail Scotland route director Ross Moran said: ‘We understand how disruptive this extended closure is for passengers and the wider city centre, and we’re extremely grateful for the continued patience and understanding people have shown.
‘The damage to the building beside the station is clearly significant and any phased reopening will depend on demolition work progressing to a stage that allows our engineers to safely return. We’ll continue working closely with Glasgow City Council to support the response however we can.’
